  • Anthurium andraeanum (Hort.) is an ornamental crop cultivated for its cut-flower, which is commercially second only to orchids among tropical flowers. The cut-flower consists of a protruding inflorescence called the spadix that is subtended by a modified leaf called the spathe.
  • The spathe is usually brilliantly colored and heart-shaped and is the more attractive part of the cut-flower.
  • Consumer preference is greatly influenced by spathe color, and novel colors are known to bring in a significantly higher premium Presently, the major spathe colors include red, pink, orange, coral and white; however, green and brown spathes are attainable as well as “obakes” which are spatial bi-colors with green lobes and colored centers, usually of the major spathe colors. The anthocyanin pigments, which are 3-rutinosides of cyanidin, pelargonidin and peonidin, contribute to the major color of anthurium spathes[1] [2] [3][4].
