  • Neurospora crassa has served as a model organism for studying circadian pathways and more recently has gained attention in the biofuel industry due to its enhanced capacity for cellulase production. However, in order to optimize N. crassa for biotechnological applications, metabolic pathways during growth under different environmental conditions must be addressed.
  • Neurospora crassa is a filamentous fungus that has served for nearly 50 years as the model organism for studying circadian pathways and the molecular clock in eukaryotes.
  • It is classified under the phylum Ascomycota and is widely distributed in nature, typically found growing on vegetation killed by fire. As such, it is able to synthesize and secrete high levels of all main enzyme types involved in lignocellulosic biomass degradation and is also able to convert pentose sugars, cellulose polymers, and agro-industrial residues to ethanol [3].
